Examination Policy of CBSE
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced significant changes to its examination policy. Here are the key aspects:
Assessment & Evaluation at Sri Sankara Vidyalaya
At Sri Sankara Vidyalaya, Sector X, Bhilai, our approach to assessment is aligned with the principles of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 emphasizing holistic development, reduced academic pressure, and meaningful learning experiences. Evaluation methods are tailored to suit each stage of a child’s educational journey.
Balvatika (Nursery to KG-II)
The Balvatika stage covering Nursery, KG-I, and KG-II is part of the Foundational Stage (ages 3-8), which focuses on joyful, play-based, and discovery-oriented learning. At the foundational level, assessments take place through child-centric, observation-based methods that promote joyful and pressure-free learning. The goal is to support the child’s development across all domains; cognitive, language, physical, emotional, and social. The assessment model in the early years of education ensures that learning is enjoyable, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate, laying a strong foundation for lifelong learning and school readiness.
Classes I to V
The assessment process for Grades I to V follows the principles outlined by CBSE and is aligned with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The focus is on creating a learner-friendly environment where the assessment system supports continuous learning, curiosity, and the overall development of the child. Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) is practiced to assess both scholastic and co-scholastic aspects of learning. Students are regularly assessed through classwork, group activities, projects, oral and written responses, and periodic assessments. The emphasis is on learning and skill-building, not on marks or competition. The aim is to evaluate not just what children learn, but how they learn encouraging critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration.
Classes VI to VIII
The assessment for Classes VI to VIII follows a structured two-term system as recommended by CBSE. Each term comprises periodic assessments, notebook evaluations, subject enrichment activities, and a term-end examination. Student performance in each subject is assessed out of 100 marks, with 20% weightage assigned to internal assessments and 80% to the term-end examination. Internal assessments are designed to capture consistent academic effort and engagement through class tests, assignments, and practical applications. This comprehensive system ensures a well-rounded evaluation that balances academic achievement with co-scholastic development, fostering essential skills such as creativity, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking.
Classes IX to XII
The assessment system for Classes IX to XII ensures academic rigor, transparency, and holistic evaluation.
Classes IX & X
For Classes IX and X, the assessment structure includes both internal and external components.
- 80% weightage is assigned to the year-end written examination conducted by the school (Class IX) and CBSE (Class X).
- 20% weightage is given to internal assessments, which include periodic tests, notebook evaluations, subject enrichment activities, and project work.
CBSE has proposed conducting two Board examinations for Class X starting from the academic session 2025–26, to be held in February and May respectively.
Students of Class X appear for the CBSE Board Examination, which assesses their conceptual understanding, application skills, and overall academic performance.
Classes XI & XII
For Classes XI and XII, regular class tests, mid-term exams, and Pre-Board Examinations (Class XII) must be conducted to ensure continuous learning and thorough preparation for final assessments.
- Students of Class XII appear for the CBSE Board Examination, which includes theory papers, practical exams, and project work, as prescribed for specific subjects.
- The evaluation emphasizes both academic excellence and subject-specific competencies through a combination of written, practical, and internal assessments.
This structured evaluation system prepares students not only for Board Examinations but also for future academic and professional pursuits with confidence and competence.

In order to be declared “Pass” in Re-Examination, a student will have to secure at least 25% marks in the subject(s) in which he/she has taken the Re-Examination. If a student does not secure at least 25% marks in the subject(s) in which he/she has taken the Re-Examination and a minimum of 33 out of 100 marks in that subject(s) or does not appear in the Re-Examination, he/she will be placed in the category of “Essential Repeat”.
